Self-image refers to how we see ourselves on a more global level, both internally and externally. Random House Dictionary defines self-image as “the idea, conception, or mental image one has of oneself.” Today, I will write about how easy is it to photoshop pictures. I took one of my own picture, without makeup, and modified it, not to the extreme, just so it looks normal. I created a face who never existed. Let's see the results.
This was my starting picture. As you can see, I have my eyebrows done and some mascara on but that's pretty much it. We were in summer so I have all my freckles popping out. I look tan, I don't smile because I don't really smile in pictures anyways.
Here is my result:
As you can see, I don't have freckles anymore, I have full on makeup and I smile. I also have pink hair. How easy and fast it was made me afraid. If I can do it, anyone else can do it. I try to not modify my pictures unless there is something I really hate, for example my lip colour doesn't match my eyeshadow. But I would never change the features of my face. I am blessed to have beautiful lips and blue eyes with high cheeck bones. But I can see why people are attracted to do it.
Let's see them side by side:
I know some people who do it but I think it is unfair because it creates a false sense of reality. People will look at those false pictures and think they are not good enough. Approximately 80% of U.S. women don’t like how they look.
34% of men are dissatisfied with their body.
Over 50% of Americans aren’t happy with their current weight.
70% of normal weighted women want to be thinner.
Body image is a big problem in our society, and can lead to depression, social anxiety and eating disorders. I work in the health industry. I have depression, anxiety and had eating disorders. I can tell you now that I see beautiful people coming at my door because they hate their appearances. It's hard to like yourself in today's world, but we can all make an effort for the generations to come. I think everyone is beautiful in their own ways and that is what makes the world unique.
We often try to be or look like someone we are not. I know for a fact that I tried to be someone else too often. We have to love ourselves inside and out and it is not easy. It will never be. It is hard work and the work of a lifetime.
I still work hard on myself everyday, to try to be comfortable in my own skin. I would be lying if I said that I love myself completely. In the end, we are all human, all unique and all beautiful the way we are.
